Silly PlayStation-Raised Gamers and Their Goofy Ideas

Claiming that nostalgia is the sole appeal of retro and retro-style games is like claiming The Three Stooges are funny purely because of nostalgia.

We grown-ups enjoy retro games because they're fun. And they look good. And they don't let cinematic bullshit get in the way of the real game. And again, they're fun.

+1. Modern games with their cinematic obsessions more often than not *detracts* from gameplay. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd, um, watch a movie, instead of playing a "game" that tries to be a movie (and fails terribly -- just read up on sequence breakers on wikipedia sometime). It's the game mechanic that makes it fun, not the eye-candy and cinematic trash (how many times have you clicked "skip" on all those cut-scenes? Admit it, they were worth watching at most only once).

Well put. Unfortunately, I get the feeling many developers are less concerned about gameplay and more concerned with imitating Hollywood.

"how many times have you clicked "skip" on all those cut-scenes?"

Far more often than the number of times it actually worked ;)

There are some rare exceptions, but for the most part, yes, I totally agree. What's more is that in the rare cases I do get curious enough to watch, it's *not* on the first playthrough. It's *after* getting at least partway through, if not all the way, and wanting a little "extra". But again, even that is rare.
